Concert on the Green

On Wednesday 25th August the Band played their only 'Concert on the Green' of 2021 to a very appreciative audience. The program included a selection of both new and old arrangements with solos from Emma Mainwaring (Principal Cornet) - Share My Yoke and Vicki Cook (Flugel) - Misty, The Rose and For Your Eyes Only.

The first series of Concerts on the Green took place during the summer of 2019 growing in popularity through June, July and August. However, the subsequent Covid restrictions meant that the band couldn't perform for the whole of 2020 and into the first half of 2021 effectively cancelling all the engagements in the Band's calendar until July 2021

The band are looking forward to working with Chris over the coming months preparing for our upcoming 2021 engagements and beyond

The committee would like to welcome Chris to Great Horwood Silver Band where we are confident that he can help take the band forward with regards to its development and history.

The MS Society was chosen as the beneficiary of the proceeds raised as the result of a memorial concert that the Band held on the 26th October in honour of Soprano player George Shaw, a long-standing member of the Band who sadly passed away at the end of 2017.

Thank you to everyone that contributed in making the evening such a success.

Christmas Concert - 2019

A big Thank you to those of you that attended our Christmas Concert on Sunday 1st Dec, it was great to see a packed hall which resulted in the afternoon being the best ever with regards to the amount of money raised on the day, the total coming in at £289.89, a fantastic result!

The Band donates the proceeds from their annual Christmas concert to other Village organisations. This year the committee have decided to round the total up to £300.00 and split it equally between the Village Cricket Club and the Church roof fund, both very worthy recipients.

40th Wedding Anniversary Surprise

Wedding 5.png

On the 8th September 2019 the Band were invited to play as part of the celebrations for Toddy and Clive Hamilton Gould’s 40th Wedding Anniversary party in Weston-on-the-Green, Oxfordshire.

On arrival the Band remained hidden from view only making their entrance at the agreed time from a lane next to the Village Hall playing Congratulations, a very big surprise for both Toddy and Clive as the last time the Band had performed for them was on their wedding day 40 years earlier!

The Band would like to thank Laura Hamilton Gould for inviting us along as in the words Emma Mainwaring ‘It was one of the best reactions she had ever seen’ as the Band made its entrance

In Memory of Len Goodwin

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of band president Mr Len Goodwin.

When he retired, Len moved from Chalfont St Peter to Great Horwood to be near his daughter Elizabeth, who lived in Great Horwood with husband, Gary. Whilst visiting Elizabeth before making the move, he was impressed with the Band touring the village on Christmas Eve, and expressed a wish to become involved.

On moving to the village, Len made his way to the bandroom and the rest is history. He became a regular visitor and very active supporter, very often accompanied by his wife Linda, who also became a great supporter of the band. They both worked to provide help whenever possible, inviting the band in for drinks and nibbles on Christmas Eve, and helping at our concerts. Len became a Vice President in 1987 and was elected President in 2006.

Len was very proud of his association with the band and was never happier than when shaking a collecting box at Christmas. He will be sorely missed by us all, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, Linda, Elizabeth and Gary.

At the funeral on Monday 13th march the band formed a Guard  of Honour on Len's arrival at the crematorium and during the service two tracks from the bands last CD were played.
